FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Of interest for editors and journalists covering: film and artists on the rise as well as theater producers and groups looking for new works.

As the independent film scene continues to grow and evolve, many new filmmakers are establishing their own avenues for distribution.

After winning Audience Choice Award at the 9th Annual Urban Mediamakers Film Festival; Filmmaker, Playwright, and HBO Def Poet Alum Malik Salaam kicks off his tour of the South East in The Sunshine State.

July 12, 2011- ATLANTA, GA- Finishing a feature film is, undoubtedly, a daunting task. But once that river is crossed there still lay ahead the mountainous region of independent film distribution. With a weak economy and the growing DSLR craze, the, seemingly, never-ending quest of finding an audience for your film takes more creativity than ever.

Atlanta native, Malik Salaam, was reminded of that with his sophomore film, Every Scar and Dimple. Set in Atlanta, Every Scar and Dimple is a romantic drama about a young artist, who seems as if his life is destined for heart break and failure. Until one night in a smoke filled jazz club, he meets a woman, who loves him despite his shortcomings, and has the ability to take him to the next level- only he must first escape the grips of his past.

“After winning Audience Choice Award at UMFF, I started on the traditional paths of securing film distribution,” Malik Salaam reflects, “but to be honest, it just seemed like it was taking too long. And then my restaurant was the host venue for The Southern Fried Regional Slam, and it [distribution] became clear.”

Over mouthfuls of Malik’s famous Jive Turkey Burger (Malik is also known as Mr. Dinner and a Movie), the filmmaker discussed with Keith Rodgers and Shadow the possibility of their Florida based organization, Black on Black Rhyme, hosting screenings of Every Scar and Dimple at their already thriving poetry events… A perfect fit for the poet whose work has been featured in HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, BET’s Lyric CafĂ©, and Black Family Channel’s Spoken. Coupled with the fact that Every Scar and Dimple has a poetic theme- it was a no-brainer- and almost immediately the wheels where set in motion.

But before kicking off a full-fledged tour, Burnin’ Metropolis Films decided to take on the challenge of Miami (during ABFF week)- with a lot of help from Ingrid Bazin of B-Side Entertainment.

“Miami has given us the wind beneath our wings,” a wide-eyed and hopeful Malik states, “and now it is time for the world to see.”

Black on Black Rhyme will host the premieres in Tallahassee (7/14), Tampa (7/19), and Jacksonville (7/21). To round off the Florida leg of the tour Malik Salaam and Burnin’ Metropolis Films has joined forces with Autumn Blaze and Huggy Bear, who are hosting the screenings in Orlando (7/20) and Pensacola (8/6), respectively.

Although Every Scar and Dimple has just started its trek, it seems well-equipped to climb any mountain… even the “Everest” of independent film distribution.
