It has everything that a good science fiction series should have. It has character development and it is experimental. Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy and Mr. Scott have a timeless appeal and the chemistry that they shared has been attempted at by practically every TV show in the genre since. Unlike the sci-fi shows before or since, Star Trek's focus was not on fantastic-looking space ships and weapons but on exploring our current beliefs in the context of a space-faring civilization. But it was entertaining. Even as it learnt from and taught new worlds and new civilizations in its explorations, what was never compromised (at least in the first two seasons) was the light-hearted banter shared by the bridge-crew. In spite of the importance of what they did, Captain Kirk, First Officer Spock, Dr. McCoy, Engineer Scott, Helmsman Sulu, Navigator Chekov and Communications Chief Uhura never forgot the equal importance of sharing a good laugh. There are instances particularly during the first two seasons when the show descends into outright hilarity even while exploring the deepest philosophical issues. The huge interiors and the huge speeds of the starship allowed the writers to do anything: action/adventure, drama, comedy, thriller. Other features that stand out are, in no particular order, 1) the clash of ideas between the coldly logical Spock and the highly emotional Dr. McCoy, the can't-live-with-him-can't-live-without-him attitude that each had towards the other lending a special flavor to their arguments. 2) the Engineer's explosive response to anyone who dared criticize the engines of the starship 3) Captain Kirk's romantic involvement almost every week with a lovely alien 3) Highly complex computer systems committing suicide under Spock's mathematical trickery or Captain Kirk's critical reasoning 5) Captain Kirk wanting the impossible from the Engineer 6) Captain Kirk's passionate defense of human qualities 7) the stories unexpectedly switching gears between humor and otherwise. In the ultimate analysis, though, Star Trek had a creator whose sense of wonder at the Unknown was matched only by his sense of humor.

This is simply because, NCIS box set at this point in time, the Cold Case 1-7 set DVD has not been Mad Men the complete seasons 1-4 released.I am a self-confessed TV junkie, and every September I eagerly await the premiers of both highly-hyped new shows and tried-and-true old favourites. During the summer of 2004, all of the TV critics were abuzz buy How I Met Your Mother series 1-5 about ABC's new offering: 'Desperate Housewives'. And, for once, almost all of this buzz was justified. After watching the pilot, I was amazed that a show as irreverent and original as this had actually been picked up by a mainstream network. The opening was dark but snappy (how often does a TV show begin with a suicide?), the cinematography perfectly captured the manicured perfection of the finely-appointed houses of Wisteria Lane, and the dialogue was funny without being obnoxious (unlike, say, any sitcom on NBC) and clever without being smug (unlike, say, 'Dawson's Creek'). The performances were also uniformly excellent, and although Teri Hatcher soon emerged as the de facto star of the show due to her prior 'Lois & Clark' fame, I though all of the other leads were fabulous as well (especially 'Melrose Place's Marcia Cross as Bree Van de Kamp, suburbia's answer to Nurse Ratched). I thought, surely this will be one of the best shows of the season. However, I felt that although the performances remained strong cheap House MD season 1-6 and the dialogue remained clever throughout the complete Star Trek Deep Space Nine season, the show did begin to suffer towards the middle of the season.
I do not want to give away any major plot points, but I got the impression that the unifying mystery (i.e. the 'who' and 'why' behind Mary Alice's suicide in the pilot) could have been told it 10 episodes, but ABC buy It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia season 1-5 dvd stretched it out over 22. In any serialized drama, there is a very delicate balance with respect to how much is 'revealed' in each episode. You must reveal enough to keep viewers interested, but not so much that they feel they good price on Two and a Half Men dvd complete series don't need to tune in again. By mid-season, the flow of hints had slowed to a trickle; virtually nothing was being revealed in each episode, and without the benefit Grey's Anatomy box all seasons of the unifying La Femme Nikita cheap dvd's mystery, the show degenerated into a series of interconnected vignettes that, while interesting, existed in a sort of vaccum. Fortunately, though, the series did pick up again near the end of the The Wire season 1-5 dvd season, and did end on a high note. I do strongly recommend picking up this DVD set because, despite my minor qualms, 'Desperate Housewives' was still one of the most original and inventive series of La Femme Nikita 1-5 the season. Let's just hope that the next season of 'Desperate Housewives' manages to pick up the pace while still retaining the excellent performances and wonderful dialogue.
I recently bought this set blindly (no silly, I have eyes, I've just never seen the show before) and couldn't be happier. This series is now the reason I'm at home on Sunday nights and not out in Desperate Housewives dvd box season 1-6 the Village like I used to be. Thanks ABC! LOL!!

Somehow I feel and that is why I like this series so much, the plots are not dissimilar to Miss Marple,(Agatha Christie) although set in a different time line. The red herrings, twists and turns, etc. village and English country life.

I love the series one of my favorites. John Nettles plays an excellent county Chief Inspector, very laid back, but sharp as a needle. More what I would expect of a country policeman in reality. They don't badger probable witnesses, like the American cops do, they are polite (yet in control at all times) and don't put people on their mettle. Then if someone does get obnoxious, defensive or arrogant back, then there might be a good reason one begins to think?

Wonderful advertisement for southern England and the British CID. (Whereas the Bill has become a soapy, in my opinion, and their employment strategies for the Met seems to allow too many nut cases being selected.)

I am not sure were the series is filmed, but the countryside seems to indicate it is from Southern counties, or even the Cotswolds. Could be anywhere, but I have the feeling it is around Somerset or Hampshire.

The characters are the most likable bunch ever to trek through space, and what they lack in internal conflict they make up for by being intelligent and interesting. Captain Picard is not the bare-chested action hero that Kirk was, but he's smarter, more thoughtful, and actually takes the time to think about the ethical consequences of his actions. To see Patrick Stewart dig his teeth into an impassioned speech is a joy, even many years after first watching it.

Brent Spiner also stands out as the android Data, Spock's opposite yet kindred spirit. Where Spock repressed his emotions and was disdainful of illogical humans, Data is curious about our foibles and aspires to be more like us. That implies that being human is not a curse, but something noble and wonderful.

The rest of the cast might be less exciting than those two, but by and large the caliber of the actors and the quality of character development is more consistent in this series than any other Trek show. These are heroes you can respect, intended to represent the best humanity has to offer. And for the record, Wesley Crusher is not so incredibly irritating as everyone claims he is.

The special effects have held up very well for a show that debuted in 1987. The "futuristic" look and feel of the sets and costumes largely prevent it looking like a time capsule. The idea here is not to create long story arcs and extended plots, but to make each hour a satisfying story in itself. This style has fallen out of favor in recent years and many people now look down on it; in its defense, it means you can watch any episode from the seven seasons and not have to worry about what happened last week.

The first two seasons are rough and inconsistent, vacillating between fair and awful episodes, but after that things pick up with only a few bad hours per season. Towards the end it started to get a little formulaic, the music turned to muzak, and there was a heavy emphasis on trivial details of alien races which would set the tone for the subsequent spin off, Deep Space 9. Apart from those minor reservations, this show is head and shoulders above everything else offered to us under the title "Star Trek" in the past fifteen years.
